You may be ready for your website to be revamped and redesigned, but is your website copy ready? Too often, websites are beautifully designed but then lack content, especially website copy. There is no question that website design is a must, but as you prepare to have your website redesigned, you need to have your website copy updated to match the redesign.

Having excellent website copy helps keep customers engaged and helps convert more clicks into sales. Your website copy helps:

  • Show people what your purpose is and how you can solve their problems.
  • Present your brand and set the tone.
  • Build relationships with your customers.
  • Improves your SEO and helps you get found by Google and your future clients!

As you can see, you NEED your website copy to be up to par to beat out your competition and attract your ideal customer.

If you struggle with writing or lack inspiration, here are a few tips to help you improve your own website copy

Here are 6 Tips for Improving Your Website Copy

Let’s dig into a few tips that you can utilize to improve your website copy.

1. Be Clear

If you want your website copy to convert, then it needs to be clear & concise

It’s time to stop confusing your customers and be clear about your solution to their problems.

While it’s important to focus on your company’s accomplishments, make sure not to overdo it or brag too much. Instead, focus on how those accomplishments can help your ideal customer.

Another tip for keeping your website copy clear is by avoiding jargon. Remember to keep it human so that your customers can easily understand what you are saying. One way to do this is by staying away from using insider terms and choosing terms that are easy for everyone to understand.

Keep your website copy focused on the big picture. It’s easy to steer in many directions, but make sure each paragraph only talks about one topic to avoid confusing your readers.

2. Hook Them In

Did you know that your content only has a few seconds to grab your customer’s attention?

So what does that mean for your website copy?

Your hook on your website homepage needs to be quick, and it needs to be something that describes how you plan on solving their problems. Your hook also should appeal to their emotions by using certain words and phrases that trigger an emotional response.

Here are a few examples of trigger words that you can use to improve your website copy.

  • New
  • Proven
  • Secret
  • Everyone
  • Fool-proof
  • Mind-blowing
  • Little-known
  • Failure
  • Outrageous
  • Yearning

When picking out your trigger words, make sure to stay on brand and insert them in an appealing way.

3. What Are The Benefits?

It’s time to stop selling the product or service and instead sell the benefits it will bring to your clients or customers.

The whole reason someone is on your website is because they want to know how they will benefit from what you are offering. They are on your website because they have a problem, and they want to see if you can fix it for them. You want your solution to be easy to find. Make sure you clearly describe how they will benefit from what you are offering.

This is where your reviews and testimonials come in. People want to see how others have benefited by purchasing from or working with you. Make sure your client reviews are easy to access on your website and feel free to feature them on the homepage as well.

When writing out the benefits for your website, follow these three tips to help persuade your reader.

  1. Be clear on how your product or service will solve their problem.
  2. You don’t need to list every feature. Instead, pick three features that offer the highest values and focus on those. Don’t overwhelm the reader and lose the point.
  3. Think about how you would sell your product or service if you were face to face with your ideal buyer. Use the same types of language and phrases to help you write your website copy.

4. Keywords

A critical aspect of improving your website copy is to incorporate keywords.

You may be thinking, what in the world is a keyword?! Don’t worry, it is more simple than it sounds. A keyword is an idea or topic that describes what your content is talking about.

Keywords are what people type into search engines like Google to find your website. For example, if someone types into a search engine “where can I get t-shirts made near me?” businesses near them that have used matching keywords will pop up first.

So what does this mean for you? You need to brainstorm the phrases people would use to find your website and incorporate those words into your website copy. Learning how to integrate keywords takes time, but as long as you include words and phrases that your ideal customer would be looking for, you are moving in the right direction!

5. Proofread

You may be excited to be finished writing your website copy, but you’re not done yet!

You need to proofread your copy before submitting it to your web designer or publishing it on your site.

It may seem like the proofreading step is a given, yet nothing turns a customer away quicker than a significant typo on your website.

Utilize website apps such as Grammarly to help proofread your copy and catch your spelling errors for you.

Consider taking a step away from your work and then coming back and proofreading it. This will help you come back with fresh eyes and increase your likelihood of catching grammatical and spelling errors.

You can also always have someone read your copy over for you. Sometimes it’s best to have a fresh pair of eyes look at it and suggest edits to you.

Whichever process you use to proofread, quality website copy will make a huge difference when it comes to converting more visitors into leads and sales. It is a vital step so don’t forget to do it!

Don’t Overthink It

We get it. Writing your website copy can be overwhelming. The best piece of advice we can give you is not to overthink it. If you follow the tips above, you are already one step closer to having excellent website copy and a step ahead of your competitors.

The great thing about your website copy is that you can update it at a later date if needed! Make sure you stay current with what problems need to be solved and incorporate that into your website each time you update your website.
